The Environmental Price of Micro Trends

Art by C. Abad, 2026

The modern closet has become a revolving door for micro trends. Fast Fashion is harmful, not only to us, but to the environment as well. Research from EBSCO highlights Fast fashion companies want to keep their prices low, and production fast. This might seem good, but in fact it turns into a vicious cycle. People cannot keep up with the overwhelming amount of trends, and therefore always have the desire to fit in, constantly finding themselves buying new trends, and throwing away “old” trends. Not only is this bad for mental health, and your wallet,  but for the environment as well. The pressure to keep up doesn’t just exhaust us; it leaves a devastating trail of waste behind. See, when we’re done with old trends, we often times feel better by donating the unwanted articles. However, Research from GAO shows due to the poor quality of clothing and lack of durability, they often get thrown away.
